Class Cnidaria is located in the Kingdom Animalia, named for it's stinging cells. Named Nematocysts, these cells are used for both defense and for capturing their prey. Most of the animals in class Cnidaria spend their time in either their medusa form or their polyps form.

All animal in the class Cnidaria are composed of two cell layers. The first layer is the epidermis which is on the outside, and the inside layer is called the gastrodermis. In between these 2 layers are either the connections that bind these 2 layers together (such as in the hydra), or the rest of the mass of the animal (such as in the true jellyfish).

The class Cnidaria has 4 different classifications. There are the Anthozoa, the Cubozoa, they Hydrozoa, and the Scyphozoa. Each class has different characteristics and you'll know more about them in the links above.

What's New?

The medusa form is the free-moving form of this animal. These are considered the "jellyfish" forms. These float through the water and entangle their prey in their tentacles, then digest them while their victims are paralyzed.

The polyps form of these animals function largely in the same way. They sting their prey with their tentacles, although it is largely moreof a trap function because of their inability to move.
